Transport
As the supermaket is not just around the corner, all the materials are transported to the hut by helicopter. Food, drinks, building materials and everything else that comes to us is delivered to the helicopter base, packed into the heli-bag and flown up over the Jungfraujoch. As the helicopter climbs to over 3500 m, it can only transport approx. 2/3 of its maximum payload. This is around 650 kg per rotation. Of course, this is not cheap - the transportation costs for one kilo are approx. CHF 1.30.
Precious good
Although the Aletsch Glacier is the largest drinking water reservoir in Europe, the water supply has always been a problem. In summer, large streams flow on the glacier. As the glacier is at least 150 meters below the hut and in constant motion, pumping up the water remains a dream. Instead, meltwater is collected at the beginning of summer close to the hut, pumped up and stored in reservoirs. We can store around 70,000 liters of water. This has to last until the end of the summer season and for the entire spring season. That's why we have to save, save, save. Around 9 liters of water are available per guest per day.
Stairs
444 kicks! You start to sweat just thinking about it! In fact, the Konkordia Staircase really puts some visitors to the test again before they reach their destination
Meteorological station
The weather station at the Konkordiahut is operated by Meteogroup. Experience has shown that it provides by far the most accurate forecast for this region. Temperature, humidity, sunshine duration, precipitation, wind direction and speed are transmitted every 10 minutes and are then processed together with the general weather situation to produce a forecast.
Kitchen
At weekends, up to 150 hungry guests have to be catered. This requires the right tools. 65-liter pans, tilting roasters, a wood stove with oven, six gas hobs, a gas oven, etc. If the hut is fully booked, meals are served in two shifts, which requires a minor organizational miracle.
Energy supply
The solar system technology is installed in the cellar. The SAC Grindelwald section has invested around CHF 300,000 in this system. A total of 32 m2 of photovoltaic modules (3,800 Wp) have been installed. The battery system has a capacity of around 3,900 Ah at 24V. An inverter (4.4kW) powers all the lighting, telephone, internet, freezer, various kitchen appliances and the dishwasher. This energy would not be enough to cook or bake electrically. Wood and gas are still used for this.
Dormitory
Around 120 beds are spread across numerous rooms on the second floor. In the event of high occupancy, additional beds are available in the Haslerhütte. With the exception of a few beds, all beds are equipped with pillows and comforters. Unfortunately, it is impossible to wash the bed linen after each use. It is therefore obligatory to use a silk or linen sleeping bag.
Top current
Since 2015, the webcam at the Konkordiahut has been transmitting up-to-date images to the big wide world almost without interruption. A single-lens reflex camera ensures sharp images even at night.
