Once built just a few metres above the glacier, the Konkordiahut now towers a good two hundred metres above it and the glacier continues to lose thickness.
Since the 1970s, the approach has been built in a solid metal construction and has been continuously extended downwards to 467 steps.
Unfortunately, the access area has been increasingly threatened by rockfall from the neighbouring couloir in recent years and the wall continues to fall into the abyss.
The SAC Grindelwald section has therefore decided to move the stairs to the southern side of the couloir. To an area that has been assessed by geologists as having better rock quality. The rock at the foot of the wall is also beginning to run out there, giving confidence that the approach can be guaranteed in the future.
